As a premier manufacturer of high-quality stainless steel cookware, Hontug is committed not only to delivering top-tier products but also to helping our partners and end-users maximize the lifespan of their kitchenware. Proper maintenance preserves the premium mirror-polished finish and ensures long-lasting kitchen performance.
Here are four essential precautions to keep in mind when using stainless steel Cookware:
1. Avoid Long-Term Storage of Acidic or Alkaline Foods
Stainless steel is highly resistant to corrosion, but prolonged exposure to highly acidic or alkaline foods (such as tomato sauces, vinegar, or heavily salted dishes) can gradually break down the protective chromium oxide layer on the steel's surface. To maintain the integrity of your cookware, transfer cooked food to storage containers rather than leaving it in the pot for extended periods.
2. Control the Heat and Ensure Even Distribution
Because stainless steel has relatively low thermal conductivity compared to materials like copper or aluminum, heat at the bottom dissipates slowly and can easily concentrate in one spot. When cooking, we recommend keeping the flame at medium-to-low heat. Ensure the heating surface at the bottom is as wide and uniform as possible. This not only saves energy but also prevents food from scorching or burning at the bottom of the pot.
3. Restore the Mirror-Finish Brightness Regularly
After a period of continuous use, a thin layer of residue or "fog" may form on the surface, causing your cookware to lose its original luster. To restore that signature high-gloss brightness, simply wipe the surface with a soft cloth dipped in a specialized stainless steel cleaning powder or high-quality dishwashing liquid. This same gentle scrubbing method works perfectly if the outer surface becomes blackened by stove smoke over time.
4. Keep the Outer Bottom Dry Before Heating
Never leave water stains on the bottom of the pot when placing it on a stove. Moisture on the exterior bottom, especially when exposed to gas stoves or open flames, can react with combustion byproducts (such as trace sulfur compounds found in some fuels). This reaction can create microscopic acidic compounds that gradually corrode and discolor the exterior bottom of your cookware. Always wipe the bottom dry before cooking.
